The same font used in the architecture and in the book? That's Mediaeval. In 2003, I created a new font for the memorial plaques on the Old Town Square in Prague, which were cast in bronze. The shapes of the letters had to respect the CNC milling technology, so they have a regular inner radius. This special detail works well in monumental typography, but also in book production.
„Mediæval“ is, in polygraphic nomenclature, „a type of Latin of Renaissance origin with reinforced round shapes“; it has nothing to do with the Middle Ages. It follows the proven proportions of the Jannon Text font. The antique has a robust skeleton covered with soft flesh, and in italics it also admits Renaissance dynamism. It is suitable for the typesetting of very extensive texts, as it does not contain sharp tips, hair strokes or other distracting elements. The darkness of the basic cut is about 14% gray, which is considered an ideally balanced rate value for minimal eye strain. The slight contrast allows for elements of variety and shading as if following the rolling of the crescent moon in the reading direction. This rhythm greatly speeds up the perception of the text. V roce 2003 jsem vytvořil nový font pro pamětní desky na Staroměstském náměstí v Praze, které byly opdlity do bronzu. Tvary liter musely respektovat technologii obrábění na CNC fréze, takže mají pravidelný vnitřní radius. Tento zvláštní detail se dobře uplatní v monumentální typografi, ale také v knižní produkci.
„Mediæval“ jest v polygrafickém názvosloví „druh latinky renesančního původu se zesílenými oblými tvary“; nemá to nic společného se středověkem. Navazuje na osvědčené proporce písma Jannon Text. Antikva má robustní kostru potaženou měkkým masem, v kursivách pak přiznává ještě renesanční dynamiku. Je vhodné pro sazbu velmi rozsáhlých textů, neboť neobsahuje ostré špičky, vlasové tahy ani jiné rušivé prvky. Tmavost základního řezu je asi 14 % šedi, což bývá považováno za ideálně vyvážený valér sazby pro minimální únavu očí. Mírný kontrast zohledňuje prvky rozmanitosti a stínování jako by sledovalo kutálení půlměsíce ve směru četby. Tento rytmus značně urychluje vnímání textu.
